Teleprompter Training Tip #21: Word Smithing
All the information for your presentation is included in your script. More than just written words, a script should be developed to be presented, rather than simply read.
You can supply it to the auto cue operator in any word processing format, Mac or PC, preferably emailed to the production company ahead of time.
Use shorter sentences wherever possible and always try to employ the contracted form of words, to better mimic the way people speak and give your presentation a more natural flow.
Your teleprompter script should only include text to be read out loud. No bullet points, indentations, images or charts of any type. Confine the script to what needs to be spoken.
If you need visual aids, use screen graphics that can be displayed to your audience.
Your auto cue operator will review the script and do some basic preparation so the lines flow evenly on the auto cue monitor. But note that if a lot of editing is required before the shoot day, a fee may be applied to cover editing time. So don’t send the auto cue operator a fully laid out storyboard . . . just send the speech!
When you are ready to bring your presentations in-house, use professional teleprompter software . . . it will make a huge difference to the success of your production.
